Campbell mt. - 3rd Access Option Proposed

Post  Admin on Fri Jan 21, 2011 10:43 pm

At last night's 'Stakeholders Meeting' yet another route up Campbell Mt. was proposed, this time by the Penticton Naturalists Club. It employs sections of an old, steep and eroded foot path, one which is in need of some serious rerouting / switch-backing prior to be considered a candidate for access / egress. The route is viable, but only if the City of Penticton engineers / recreation departments take IMBA's trail building guidelines to heart.

Check out the link at the bottom of this page for a full overview of the proposed route; note the issues and perhaps take some time on your own to check out the area. Google Earth maps only tell part of the story when it comes to the lay of the land. There is nothing like 'boots on terrain' to get the big picture. You will need to have Google Earth installed in order to view this file;

Third Campbell Access Proposal

For those of you without access to Google Earth, here is a static image of the area (not as intuitive as a Google Earth overview, but does the trick)

In this image, the black line is the original, steep, eroded trail, and the brownish line is the switchbacks that will have to be implemented in order to make this route viable as a multiuse recreational trail, even in it's most basic form. The red area, marked in the middle, is a 'no-go' zone of steep, 'rotten' bedrock - unsafe under anything but ideal conditions - and even then; sketchy.
