Switchbacks up from Canyon Trail

Post  1part@atime on Sun Apr 14, 2013 10:48 am

We were out on a Birthday/Friday/Schools Out ride just doing a Classic Campbell and having some fun in the rain. Came back to the climb up from the Canyon and happened upon some trail destruction on the switchbacks up to the road.
Somebody made a ridiculous and impossible turn avoiding a trail feature. It was too tight to fit a bike through and required getting off a bike and hiking. I tried riding the old way, but debris was thrown on to the path which cause a pretty enjoyable endo for the spectators.

To whoever thought this was a good fix, whether there was erosion or dirt bike damage, it wasn't. You need to go back and return it to its delightful state that it once was when we built it. If you build a turn that a bike does not fit on (back wheel drops off the trail when turning as wide as possible) it is too tight and really kills the flow.

Cheeky Monkey

That was my doing; I had intended on getting around the dip in the land there, which killed momentum when ascending.

Went in on a rainy day without a bike... which didn't allow me to try an ride my work afterward. Looking at it, I fully realized that it would be tight, but without my bike, had no idea just how tight. Figured that I'd hear from someone on it, but thought it might come in the form of "hey dude, trail mod' too tight - needs widening".

Will go up this week and widen the entrance / exit to the point where my mom could ride it. Won't reopen the old route as I despise the momentum killing dip in the climb.

Dippy

Tell ya' what; once I secure permission from the private land owner and we start in on the Crop Circles to Burnt Rock connector, you can build in your very own dip; hell, you can even name it...

Rework

Post  Admin on Wed Apr 17, 2013 1:49 am

So there ya' go; reworked to the point that your mom could ride it, my mom could ride it -- hell, our grandmas could ride it on a tandem... drinking... with one foot unclipped...

And then they all die in a fiery crash into the Canyon. The Switchbacks of False Hope. Wink

FYI, when I do it in reverse, I am blasting through the decommissioned dip so expect tire tracks.

But thanks for fixing it.
